Wonderful Wanderers

Welcome to the great outdoors at Penn State Behrend! Each day, we will explore and discover a different aspect of the natural world around us. Through games, art activities, stories, and discussions, we will engage in the outdoors through exciting ways. Our adventures will include exploring the weather, plants, backyard wildlife, rocks, and water. Perfect for young explorers and nature-loving kids! Come prepared for an outdoor adventure as we spend most of our time roaming the beautiful campus of Behrend!

All About Science Experiments!

Dates: June 29–July 3

Welcome to a world full of wacky, fun science experiments! In this course, children will get a simplified introduction to scientific processes. Together, we will explore each step of the scientific method. Every day, students conduct a new experiment, and they can bring their findings home to share with family and friends. This class is designed to spark a love for science in children, while allowing them to have fun and learn how to observe, hypothesize, experiment, and analyze!

Slime-y Science

Dates: June 29–July 3
Time: 9:00 a.m.–noon
Instructor: Vicki Saska
Ages: 6–10
Cost: $125

Calling all slime fanatics! This course is for you! Welcome to a land filled with ooey, gooey SLIME! In this class, we will investigate the science behind slime and make our own concoctions using different recipes and ingredients! In this course, we will expand our scientific knowledge, learn terminology, explore the concepts of thermochromics, and more! Once constructed, we will evaluate our products to see who created the greatest slime concoction and share our creations and recipes with friends and families. If you like science, and you like slime, we welcome you to sign up for this class!

This course has limited availability and is expected to sell out. Please plan accordingly.

Bricks & Books (LEGO®-Themed Course)

Dates: June 29–July 3
Time: 9:00 a.m.–noon
Instructor: Lauren Konkol
Ages: 6–10
Cost: $125

Does your child like to read? Are they a bookworm who enjoys immersing in the depths of a delightful book while being creative? Welcome to a course where we combine that love or reading and make it even more fun with LEGOs! Children will read children's books and then build assorted items from the story using LEGO® building toys. While reading, children will learn about the basic parts of a story and build things like the setting, characters, plot, and more as they read and enjoy the book! Come expand your mind, develop your reading skills, and have fun doing it by playing with LEGOs as you read and building something fantastic!

Puppet Making 101

Dates: June 29–July 3
Time: 9:00 a.m.–noon
Instructor: Megan Jell
Ages: 8–12
Cost: $135

In a world filled with basic hand stitching techniques using needle and thread, students will design, create, and then assemble their own fuzzy hand puppet to take home and share with family and friends. This course was designed to allow students the opportunity to learn how to sew, while using their imagination and creative skills to design their very own puppet to cherish for years! If your child likes fashion, designing clothes, or wants to learn a new skill (sewing) then this would be the perfect course to let them explore the art of design!

*Due to an increase in the cost of art supplies and materials for this course, a $10 fee has been added to the class to cover the cost of items the students will use during the program.

The Behrend Band! New course

Dates: June 29–July 3
Time: 9:00 a.m.–noon
Instructor: Susan Forsythe
Ages: 8–12
Cost: $125

Join The Behrend Band for a week at College for Kids and become a composer, musician, and performer all in one! In this dynamic class, students will learn how to imagine, create, and express their own musical ideas through singing, playing instruments, and creative collaboration. Throughout the session, we’ll explore the building blocks of music—melody, rhythm, and harmony—while encouraging each student’s unique musical voice. Whether you're a budding songwriter or just love making music, this class is your stage—let’s make some noise!

*This course was made possible through a donation in memory of Mike Sider in order to instill a passion and love for music in the next generation of children.

Work of Art!

Dates: June 29–July 3
Time: 9:00 a.m.–noon
Instructor: Tami Hritzay
Ages: 8–12
Cost: $135

Put on your thinking caps and get ready to design some pretty neat things! In this course, students will learn how to develop contemporary 3D art that moves! Students will use paper, wire, and different textiles to create works of art from deep within their souls. Get ready for the adventure! What will you create this summer?!

Dance 101 New course

Dates: June 29–July 3
Time: 9:00 a.m.–noon
Instructor: Alicea Chludzinski
Ages: 10–14
Cost: $125

Interested in dance but unsure where to start or which style suits you best? Dance 101 is the perfect class to find out! Each day, we’ll explore a different dance style, beginning with the history of jazz dance and the lively rhythms of jazz music. Next, we’ll dive into ballet, answering the classic question: 'How do ballerinas stand on their tiptoes?' We'll also explore hip-hop, discovering its origins and the culture behind the dance. Finally, we’ll express emotion through lyrical dance and learn how Broadway stars can sing and dance simultaneously. In each class, we’ll not only cover the history and influential figures of each style, but also experience the dances firsthand with warm-ups, stretching, basic steps, and short routines. While dance attire (leotards, tights, ballet slippers, jazz shoes, or dance paws) is welcome, it's not required. Students can also wear comfortable athletic clothes with socks and sneakers. Get ready for a week filled with excitement, movement, and discovery!

Welcome to a world where science enters our kitchen! Come join us as we learn the science, engineering, and math behind everyday tasks you can do in your very own kitchen. Some of our experiments will be edible; some may explode. Some of our experiments may even GROW! In this kitchen, anything is possible! Spend a week this summer learning how to grow your own food, create homemade ice cream, build slime, and so much more! No matter what task each day may bring, we will learn how to cut, prepare, and work safely in a kitchen environment while having fun! Please be aware of food allergens.

*While this course does more than just cooking, we encourage all participants to be aware of food allergens if participating in the course. Cross contamination from other lessons and activities within other courses is possible, since all classes share the same kitchen, cookware, and materials!

Afternoon Sessions (1:00–4:00 p.m.)

Do, Re, Mi!

Dates: June 29–July 3
Time: 1:00–4:00 p.m.

Calling all young music lovers! In this course, students will embark on a fun-filled journey into the world of music notation. Through engaging games, hands-on activities, and plenty of singing, students will learn to read and write musical notes, rhythms, and symbols. We’ll explore the musical staff, note values, and simple melodies, helping children develop a strong foundation in music literacy. Whether your child is a budding musician or just discovering their love for music, this class will make learning do, re, mi as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Screen-Free Fun!

Say goodbye to screens and hello to nonstop fun! This action-packed, week-long camp is designed to get kids moving, thinking, and laughing through exciting hands-on games. Each day brings a brand-new theme, keeping curiosity and creativity at an all-time high!

  • Monday: Get artsy with colorful, creative challenges!
  • Tuesday: Dive into thrilling science experiments and discovery games!
  • Wednesday: Math becomes an adventure with number-packed games!
  • Thursday: Wordplay and storytelling make English day unforgettable!
  • Friday: End the week on a high note with musical games and rhythm fun!

With at least three engaging games daily, your child will build problem-solving skills, teamwork, and coordination—all while having an absolute blast. If you're looking for the perfect mix of learning and playing, this is the camp to join!

STEAM-y Spa

Dates: June 29–July 3

Are you ready to relax and unwind after a long, stressful school year? Welcome to Behrend Day Spa! This class will allow young students to create a variety of bath and body products while practicing mathematical skills and scientific methods. We will be learning STEAM skills, but in a fun, BEAUTIFUL, exciting environment. Channel your inner peace and come to relax! Spend a week living the life of luxury and creating memories with friends who share similar interests!

*Due to an increase in the cost of groceries and materials for the course, a $10 fee has been added to class to cover the cost of food and other items the students will use during the week.

Advanced Drawing 401 (Advanced Skill Course)

Dates: June 29–July 3
Time: 1:00–4:00 p.m.
Instructor: Tami Hritzay
Ages: 10–14
Cost: $135

Not for the weak or beginning artist, this advanced-level course is curated for the students with a passion and talent for drawing. Pencil, colored pencil, pen, and ink will be the media used in this class, as we sketch our way into another dimension. We will also improve two-point perspective, drawing using proportions, and continue techniques in layering colored pencil. Again, please be advised, this course is designed for students who already possess a strong artistic talent. For a more beginner-style drawing course, check out ‘The Sketchbook’ courses offered!

Introduction to Robotics

Dates: June 29–July 3
Time: 1:00–4:00 p.m.
Instructor: Paul Semrau
Ages: 10–14

Come explore the fascinating world of robotics, where robots are found everywhere—from toys and industrial machines to those used in space exploration. Discover how the science behind these incredible creations impacts your everyday life. Through hands-on experimentation and design, you will build robots using the LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime Set, Jitter Bot, MiP, Edison, and more to tackle exciting projects!

*This course requires a Penn State login for our computer network on campus. Details on how to obtain this login will be emailed to participants after registration.
