Women in Technology Day introduces high school students to the different careers available in the fields of technology, focusing specifically on computing. Membership or participation in this program is not limited by sex or gender. This program is open to all applicants who satisfy its academic criteria.
Professional mentors, as well as faculty and current students from Penn State Behrend, provide hands-on workshops during the event. At the 2019 event, several companies, including National Fuel Gas Company, Erie Insurance, TechnipFMC, and Wabtec Corporation, hosted activities designed to introduce students to careers that are made possible by majoring in computing or information technology.
For example, as part of National Fuel’s activity, the students used their phones to collect GPS points for a National Fuel Gas Company pipeline. The students then compared the data gathered with that of National Fuel employees, who used professional—and more accurate—Arrow Gold Global Navigation Satellite System units. The GPS mapping activity was designed to illustrate one of the diverse career fields available to students.
